NEW STOCK LOADING.....

Sometimes happy mistakes happen, in this case my tool slipped as I was trying to pry the bat from the wheel head.

I was definitely annoyed at first especially because it was a piece I'd filmed whilst throwing with hope to video the progression of my work in stages.

I was just about to scrunch it up and start again when the hole in its side gave me an idea.

Who doesn't love a bit of interior design staging?
It's that..." I just happened to leave this tray with a candle and well positioned stack of books sitting here" kind of vibe 😂

Something I swore I'd never make no matter how much someone offered me!

It's not personal I swear.. I like a cuppa as much as the next gal. For me it was the risk, the risk of breakage, the top and body not lining up, warping, cracks in joints the list of negatives is endless and the risk would far outweigh the cost any sane person would be willing to pay.

Saying all that... it has nagged at me for years that I call myself a potter and haven't tackled making a teapot, so when this special commission request came in I thought why the heck not!

Sometimes I surprised myself with how beautiful and well made a piece is... Other times I think what the heck was I doing!?!

This is one of those moments, I forgot the basics and I'll tell you...... there is nothing more humbling than clay when you don't give it the care and attention it requires.... Lesson learned!

Back to the wheel and I'll be sure to spend extra time compressing the corners and being more patient in the drying process 🤦‍♀️

all wheel throwing lessons and group bookings are held at Claeg House Studio in GT Finborough, larger parties can be taught at a location of your choice for the cost of £30 pp +45p per mile travel expenses.

🤍 C I N S I S T E N C Y 🤍

In the world of production throwing, (which I admit I'm fairly new to, I've always been a one of a kind girlie) consistency is key... And that's not just at the throwing stage, every step has to be the same to get the same end result.

▫️It starts with the texture of the clay, too wet and the clay won't be stable enough to throw, too dry and the throwing process becomes a lot harder and there's more risk of the clay snagging on tools. Also water weighs... Silly thing to say but the wetter the clay the heavier it is and that will throw off the next part of the process ⬇️

▫️ Weighing.. it's vital to weigh out your clay, starting with the same amount each time gives you a good chance of turning out work the same size and shape!

▫️Have a plan on how you are shaping your clay... You'll see in this video I do a very purposeful flattening of the base, this is for compression reasons too but mainly I use this part to gauge the width of my inner base.. 3 fingers from the centre on my right hand. I also use the width markers on the wheel head for the outside wall.

▫️Lastly you'll have noticed the big lump of clay on my bench.. but did you spot the stick poking out of it?
The tip of this stick is set to the height and width of my template form so I aim to get the lip of the mug to just hover on the tip of the stick, that way I know I'm the same height and width as my other mugs.

🤍 P A R T 2 🤍

Finishing mugs...

( Special shout out to the lovely @lizzie_ludbrook for being my camera woman today ❤️)

Trimming....watching the clay coil off is THE MOST satisfying thing ever! I also love this part as it instantly turns a rough thrown piece into a smooth almost finished form.

Handles... The handles from yesterday have firmed up and are ready to trim, slip and score, then attach to the mug body.

Finishing touches... I'm a stickler for the fine details, finishing each joint perfectly and smoothing out any small indentations that might have occurred during the handle placement. It's at this point I give it a good once over look to make sure it's up to my high standards.

These will now dry slowly under a plastic sheet .. this part is really important, if the mugs dry too quickly the handles could form cracks around the joints which would be disastrous after all the efforts to get them this far ... Patience is key!

Check back in to see them being glazed after their first firing.

Life revolves around the creative, the car you drive... Designed by a creative mind, the house you buy... Designed by a creative mind, the clothes you wear... Yep, all come from the creative industry yet arts and design fall at the bottom of the educational pile.

This is why I'm so passionate and excited to teach, both young and slightly older 😉... It's never too late to let your inner creative child flourish.

C O M M I S S I O N S... WHAT THEY MEAN TO ME.

Creating a bespoke commission piece is probably one of my favourite things to do. It's my work, it's my soul and passion but it's also you... It's what you need or what you want, it fits in your home, it brings you joy and the thing I love the most is it's one of a kind, I literally couldn't make one exactly the same if I tried.

The journey starts with you, what do you want this piece of art to do for you, is it sculptural, functional do you have a space in mind for it? Think about texture and how light plays in your space, the contrast between light and shadow can be transformed with glaze colour and finish.

The making..... When I make a commission I never weigh the clay, I use weight to determine form and continuity in my production pottery so the last thing I want to be doing is thinking about previous projects, this one is new it has a shape weight and style of it's own....it's totally unique.

There's always a risk that "new ideas" might not work out but the pride and elation I feel when I lift the lid of the kiln and see, not only a technically successful piece ( no cracks, warping or glaze faults) but art and beauty that brings joy and a whole heap of other emotions.... And to think it started out as nothing more than fancy mud.

So thank you, not only for supporting my business but for having faith in my creativity, for your expectations and standards that keep me striving to be the best I can be, for your compliments and gratitude that make it sooooo worthwhile.

This carved dish is a beautiful blend of moody but light, and the texture...oh the texture delivered!

This piece was a bit of a punt on a new glaze called cloudy blue from @hotclayuk , I layered it with a black underglaze first and a generous application of cloudy blue on top and she did not disappoint! I can't wait to experiment more!

This is easily one of my favourite things out of this kiln so far this year. The texture matched with the colours and the proportions are giving major vibes.
It just goes to show that ceramics don't need to be big to have show stopper impact.

I'll be taking time to experiment with this glaze more over the coming weeks, maybe on a flat dish.... I'd love to see it pool in a bowl😍

Spring has sprung and it was an absolute delight to turn this carved bowl into a beautiful seasonal centre piece....

To transform the use of my bowl I used a simple bit of kit, a floristry frog... Yep it's got a weird name.
I foraged greenery from the hedgerow and garden, daffodils and blossom are a must have in any spring arrangement but I love the deep purple tones of the hellebore too.
